Special gymnastics training to be imparted to the talented Dharavi boys – An initiative by Manager of Dharavi Sports Complex, Mrs Varsha Upadhyevarsha-upadhye
We often see the kids on the street go about practicing some stunts, acts or dance which doesn’t necessarily catch the public’s eye. But these kids at Dharavi seemed to show some great potential. They caught the eye of the authorities at the Sports complex in Dharavi while performing some gymnastics flips and tumbles, all without receiving any professional training – which without safety gears can prove to be fatal.
Dharavi – the biggest slum in the world – is famous all over the globe for all the small scale industries, the slumdog millionaires and the gully boys and girls of music and dance. Little did we know that some kids from that very place possess the talent of being great gymnasts of this country!
These kids, if trained with proper safety measures and given access to professional equipment, have the potential to become prominent sports players who can make the country proud. Keeping this in mind, along with the support of the Sports Department of the State Government, the sports authorities at Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex in Dharavi have started a Special Training Program for these talented kids.
This initiative was spearheaded by International Judge, coach and former player of Rhythmic Gymnastics Mrs.Varsha Upadhye who is not only a Shiv Chhatrapati Rajya Krida Puraskwar Awardee but also the Founder, Chief Coach of Premier Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy. She has, in her career span, given rise to many international players, coaches and judges. She currently works as the Manager of the Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex in Dharavi. She was taken aback by the talent possessed by the street kids and immediately set forth to adopt them into the training regime, providing a platform to nurture their talent. Her efforts were appreciated by Sports Minister of State, Mr. Vinod Tawde who provided his support for this noble cause and wished the very best for these kids.
Shiv Chattrapati Awardee Akash Dongre will be training these kids in the sport of Artistic Gymnastics.
This program was inaugurated on 8th December, 2018. The classes will be held twice a week –Saturdays and Sundays – from 5 pm to 7 pm.
